Book Review: The Greatest Salesman In The World by Og Mandino

You might have never heard of this book before, but The Greatest Salesman In The World is a self-help book you don’t want to miss checking out. And this book review will tell you why.

Let me connect some dots for you.

I mentioned The Greatest Salesman In The World in my post about building confidence from scratch, when you were raised having none. I told you my personal story about how my confidence was close to zero while I was a teenager and caused me so much pain in my relationships. I was wearing baggy clothes to hide in them, and every time someone would talk to me I would get blushed. I hated people’s attention, and that lasted for so many years.

How does that help you, though?

Don’t you just hate it when people share some soupy stories meant to break your heart…. but they don’t?

Because you have them too.

You struggle too with maintaining a normal life – trying to find or keep love, trying to make everyone happy, including yourself, stressing over small and big things. You might not need “another blogger’s story”, and I understand this. I don’t need reading soupy stories either.

But you know what you and I like?

We like to learn from other people’s experience.

Because life is too short to learn from ours. At least not all the time.

So, what I’m talking about? And how is it connected to the book I believe will change your life?

Imagine you could have a guide through the hardest times of your life. No matter if you are in the middle of a mess right now or thinking about struggles from your past, there’s a certain picture in your head.

It doesn’t matter.

Just imagine that you have that guide, staying there, giving you the hope you cannot find within you. Needless to say, you would hold onto it with both hands and read and reread it all the time.

That’s what The Greatest Salesman In The World Was For Me.

I’ll explain why.

Almost 20 years ago I was a shy 11 years old girl who believed life wasn’t going to offer her too much. Ever. My father’s second marriage left me wounded and with low self-esteem that threatened to rule my poor existence. My stepmother would shout and swear at me for years; she would hide food from me and treat me like a street dog. My father wouldn’t notice these stuff as they never happened in front of him and I would be too depressed to talk about them. They divorced at some point, I thought I got over it, but not long ago I accidentally had to speak with her for a minute… and I was shaking like a defenceless child again.

That reminded me of a few things:

  • There are wounds that we will never fully recover from.
  • And that’s alright.
  • There are fights we will always battle.
  • And that’s alright too.
  • But none of this means we should give up.

I was 15 years old when I first got my hands on The Greatest Salesman In The World by Og Mandino. It was a ripped old book with dusty pages, underlined paragraphs and pathetic cover… lying on my mother’s coffee table. I was visiting her for a week or two during the summer break. I spent the two weeks secretly reading this book.

Why?

I will never forget the first paragraph I read of it:

“I will persist until I succeed. I was not delivered into this world into defeat, nor does failure course in my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. I am a lion, and I refuse to talk, to walk, to sleep with the sheep. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny. I will persist until I succeed.”

I was crying at the end of it and my heart was pumping more blood than I had.

It was the first time I realised that being a lion or a sheep is a choice.

I also knew that I should “persist until I succeed”. Succeed in what? I had no idea. How? No idea either. But I knew none of these answers would matter because it’s important to start the fight against yourself to get somewhere. Ever.

Life is too short not to persist. And this book will help you do it.

But That’s Not All. 7 Things I learned from The Greatest Salesman In the World

Years later I saw the same book in a bookstore and believe me when I say that in my entire life, I’ve never bought anything else so fast. I had to have my copy. It was my self-help bible for so long. I don’t like underlining in books, but this one is my exception.

It thought me so many things that it’s hard to list them, but here are 7 things you will learn from it:

Loading...
  • How to keep trying even when you are failing.
  • How to stay motivated even when you want to drop everything and run.
  • How to be kind with people you don’t want to be kind to. And why this is important.
  • How to control your feelings instead of allowing them to control you.
  • How to smile to the world when the world doesn’t want to smile to you.
  • How to pray for guidance when you don’t know if the pray will help.
  • How to act now when acting is the last thing you want to do.

…and more.

But if you like facts more than personal experience, here’s a few of them

Og Mandino was born in 1923.

He was a military officer and a bombardier in WWII.  He flew for 30 bombing mission over Germany. After the war, he became an insurance salesman. He had alcohol problems and one day he contemplated committing suicide. (Source) Soon afterwards, as he was sorting books in the library the self-help section caught his attention. He spent years in reading and learning. His career as an author and motivational speaker followed shortly after that.

His books are translated in 25 languages and sold in over 50 million copies. He is an inductee of the National Speakers Association’s Hall of Fame. (Source)

The Greatest Salesman In the World was published in 1968 and is his absolute bestseller, part of many successful people’s libraries.

What is The Greatest Salesman In the World About?

The Greatest Salesman In the World Book Review

It isn’t the normal do-this/do-that self-help book.

It’s an engaging story about a young orphan boy who decided to be the greatest salesman in the world… in the name of love. The story is intertwined with the birth of Jesus Christ, but if this is something that might put you off, be assured the meaning behind all of it is greater than different beliefs.

Some of My Favourite Quotes

“Within me burns a flame which has been passed from generations uncounted and its heat is a constant irritation to my spirit to become better than I am, and I will.”

And most of all I will love myself. For when I do I will zealously inspect all things which enter my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. Never will I overindulge the requests of my flesh, rather I will cherish my body with cleanliness and moderation. Never will I allow my mind to be attracted to evil and despair, rather I will uplift it with the knowledge and wisdom of the ages. Never will I allow my soul to become complacent and satisfied, rather I will feed it with meditation and prayer. Never will I allow my heart to become small and bitter, rather I will share it, and it will grow and warm the earth.”

“In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is—I will form good habits and become their slave.”

“I will become a firefly, and even in the day, my glow will be seen in spite of the sun. Let others be as butterflies who preen their wings yet depend on the charity of a flower for life.”

“If I feel depressed I will sing. If I feel sad, I will laugh. If I feel ill, I will double my labour. If I feel fear, I will plunge ahead. If I feel inferior, I will wear new garments. If I feel uncertain, I will raise my voice. If I feel poverty, I will think of wealth to come. If I feel incompetent, I will remember past success. If I feel insignificant, I will remember my goals. Today I will be master of my emotions.”

“for when an act becomes easy through constant repetition it becomes a pleasure to perform and if it is a pleasure to perform it is man’s nature to perform it often. When I perform it often it becomes a habit, and I become its slave, and since it is a good habit this is my will. Today I begin a new life.”

“Wealth should never be your goal in life. True wealth is of the heart, not of the purse.”

Final Words on The Book

You may wonder why should you invest in a yet another self-help book.

In my experience, we often get motivated, jump into the waters of life and try to swim without ever touching the water before.

And that’s a brilliant way to succeed … or drown.

Why?

Because there’s a certain way, happy and successful people approach this world. And not all of us are familiar with it. They have a different mindset, they talk, walk and think differently. They see the world a place of possibilities, not as a place of torture and challenges. Actually, they don’t like the challenges but welcome them as they know: Every challenge is a step on the lather to achieving their dreams.

And we all have our lathers and our challenges. But just a few of us make the steps.

The Greatest Salesman In The World will help you take a few steps on your lather.

Will you allow it to change you?
